Five-Storied Pagoda, Senso-ji, Tokyo

Senso-ji's pagoda, shot from inside a doorway on the far side of the courtyard. A good part of why I came to Tokyo was the architecture, and this is the reason why — the building I was standing in framed the one I was photographing, and I did not have to do anything clever about it. December had stripped the tree beside it back to bare branches except for one ginkgo that had not let go yet, about the only colour in the scene that was not red, grey or timber. Frames like this are mostly patience: you find the opening, then wait for the courtyard to hand you a second where nobody is standing in it.
