Tokyo had been on my bucket list for years and I finally got there sideways — a layover on the way to India that I stretched out into four days and three nights. I went for all of it: the food, the architecture, the culture, the whole way of life that everybody online will not stop talking about. This is an ordinary weekday platform. Everyone lined up exactly where the doors were going to open, nobody drifting, nobody jockeying for position. I dragged the shutter to let the train blur through and keep the people still, which is close to how the city actually feels — moving very fast around a set of very calm rules.
