A car on Ridgecrest Boulevard above the fog layer on Mount Tamalpais, Marin County, California

Mount Tamalpais, California

Ridgecrest Boulevard on Mount Tamalpais in late August, with the entire Pacific buried under fog. You climb up through the grey for twenty minutes and then all at once you are above it, the fog sitting flat to the horizon like someone put a lid on the ocean. The grass had gone completely gold, the way it does out here by then. A single car came around the bend while I was set up, which was lucky, because without it there is nothing in the frame to tell you how big any of this is. I spent two years in Washington driving at mountains, and that habit came south with me.
